I love to fix things. That is probably why I became a multi-skilled electrician with SPX. And if I can’t fix something right away, I take it upon myself to learn how I can. But whether it’s an electrical challenge or welding project, if I don’t have the right tools, my hands are pretty tied.
That’s how I felt seven years ago when I discovered I had type 2 diabetes. I got sick at work one day and had my blood checked. My A1c was around 7.9% and my doctor wanted to put me on meds right away. I said no. I figured this was one more thing I could fix myself. If I lost a few pounds, ate more fruits and vegetables, and started going to the gym a bit more, I could nip this in the bud.
I was wrong. At least, I was wrong to think I could do it on my own.
Three years after my initial diagnosis, my A1c had continued to climb and I began getting fungal infections in my hands, which cost me the tips of my two middle fingers. But even with the setbacks, I continued to try to fix this on my own. I tried different diets and vitamins, but it was like using a hammer to tighten a screw. I was getting some results, my A1c came back down to the high 6s, but there had to be an easier way.
Then, about five months ago, my company introduced me to Virta. The email explained that Virta being provided at no cost as part of my benefits and that it could help me naturally reduce my A1c without medications. It was like a light I had been working on for years finally came on. This was the tool I needed.
I went online and applied. Shortly after being accepted into the treatment, the real work began. Right away I was given links to video resources that would help me understand how the treatment worked. With Virta, it wasn’t going to be enough to take a pill or just eat more vegetables, Virta wanted me to understand the science before I began.
Within only a few weeks on the Virta treatment, I started to see the results. The hardest part of the nutrition plan for me was giving up sugary sodas, but I replaced them with seltzer water, and it helped curb my cravings. I swapped sugar in my coffee for monk fruit and instead of sandwiches everyday, I started eating lettuce wraps. They felt like just small changes, but those small changes had a huge impact. When I saw my numbers drop, I thought, “Okay, this is the ticket.”
In only four months on the Virta treatment, I have lost almost 50 pounds, went from a size 38 waist to 34, and at my last check-up, had dropped my A1c down to 5.4%—below the threshold for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes! It is as if I have hit the reset button on my health!
And what I didn’t expect was that on top of looking better and having healthier numbers, I also have way more energy to do the things I love. I’m just finishing up the final touches on building a new workshop at home and I can’t wait to use it to jump on other projects. Like I said, I love fixing things. And with the right tools, anything is possible—even when it comes to my health.
I want to thank SPX for providing Virta and my Virta coach for helping me with my treatment. And to my colleagues, if you want to reverse type 2 diabetes and have more energy just by changing a few habits, take a look at Virta. It really is life-changing.
