When my dad passed away from cancer and complications of type 2 diabetes 29 years ago, it served as my wake up call. I was 31 at that time and knew my own blood sugar was higher than normal and my weight was a contributing factor.
Determined to turn things around, I started to run—a lot. In 6 weeks I ran my first 10k. Then I started training for and competing in triathlons. I was running 40-60 miles a week and taking oral medications just to keep my blood sugar in check. I knew it wasn’t sustainable as it started taking a toll on my body.
I was put on insulin in 2002 despite my best efforts to stay on top of my diet and exercise. But as the years ticked on, my joints started to hurt more and more. And as my body slowed, my weight increased. My A1c was also fluctuating—normally in the 8 range, it crested up to 11 when I was not consistent with diet and exercise. I was scared of what would happen if I decided to hang up my running shoes for good.
In March of 2020 I received an email from my employer JLL about a benefit that helped patients reverse type 2 diabetes. I’ll admit it, I was a bit skeptical at first. I watched the incredibly inspiring patient video and read about the treatment. But it wasn’t until I shared it with my doctor and saw his positive response that I allowed myself to believe this could work.
I didn’t know what to expect, but I started the treatment on April 1st. Within the first week, my insulin was cut in half. Then by half again. By April 11th, I was off insulin completely for the first time in 20 years.
What really struck me about the treatment was how easy it was to fold into my everyday life. More often than not, I don’t even think about it. The Virta treatment has become a part of who I am—and I love it. When I joined Virta, my goal wasn’t to lose weight, but I went from 200 pounds to 160 pounds and feel great—better than I have in my adult life. The inflammation causing my aches and pains has gone away, my A1c is down in the low 6s with only a tiny dose of glibenclamide, and I have more energy than ever.
Three years ago, I thought I was at the start of my decline. My dad passed at 62. I’m 61 next month and feel incredible. I wish Virta was around for my father. It has been a godsend.
When people ask me how I stick with it or how I can be so dedicated, I can honestly say that for me, it doesn’t take any will power because it works so well. Well, that and I have an incredible support system. The health coaches at Virta are top class and my family’s support has made all the difference.
I am truly Blessed. Thank you JLL and thank you Virta.
