Michael Scahill, MD, MBA
Medical Director

Dr. Michael Scahill is Medical Director at Virta Health where he oversees a clinical team practicing continuous remote care with the goal of reversing type 2 diabetes in millions of people.

Raised in Scranton, PA, Dr. Scahill studied biochemistry and history at Boston College. He won a Fulbright grant in 2005 and spent a year at a research institute in New Delhi, India where he worked on an early stage vaccine to prevent malaria in pregnancy. Michael went on to earn his MD with a concentration in health policy and his MBA with concentration in public management both from Stanford University in 2012. He went on to graduate from UCSF's Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved residency program in 2015.

Formative experiences working from the Dominican Republic through Kenya and Mozambique to India fostered a passion for global health and a belief in market-based solutions to thorny problems of population health. These led him to his current role as Medical Director and founder of Virta’s partner medical practice group.

Outside of Virta (and sometimes within), Dr. Scahill is often found pursuing his fascination with machine-learning as a self-taught programmer. A passionate rugby player, Mike has suited up for teams on four continents including as Captain of Stanford’s graduate team and most recently with San Francisco’s Olympic Club.
